Heating & Cooling FAQ
General questions
Should I be concerned about indoor air quality?
Yes, especially in modern homes that have been sealed well for energy efficiency. According to the environmental Protection Agency (EPA), your exposure to air pollutants can be much higher indoors than outdoors. Hudco Inc offers our customers a suite of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) products that renew, filter and protect your indoor air.
What is the best thermostat to use with my system?
A programmable thermostat can help you save money by running your furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump only when needed. Properly installed and used, it can save you more than the cost of the thermostat itself. Contact us to learn more about upgrading to a thermostat that saves you money and offers time-saving features like remote access.
What does the air handler do for my system?
An air handler, also known as a fan coil, combines the fan from a furnace and the evaporator coil. It’s mainly used in homes with a heat pump or air conditioner, where it pulls air from the home, circulates it through the indoor coils to heat or cool it, and then sends it back into the house via ductwork. Homes with a furnace don’t need an air handler, as the furnace fan and evaporator coil perform the same function.
Questions on purchasing an HVAC system
What is involved in installing a new system?
Ductwork is a key part of your HVAC system and must be properly sized to deliver the right amount of air to each room. Made from either metal or fiberglass, ducts include supply and return lines—supply ducts deliver air from the furnace or air handler to each room. Improper ductwork design and installation can lead to discomfort and higher energy costs.
What is involved in replacing an old system?
In addition to installing new equipment, we will inspect various components to determine if they need to be repaired or replaced. These include ductwork, insulation, refrigerant piping, electrical service, wiring, thermostat, condensate piping, flue piping, chimney liner, filter, registers, grills, drain pans, and the evaporator coil. Replacing multiple components at once can help maximize energy savings with your new system.
How do I select the right heating and air conditioning system?
Hudco Inc., ensures you get the right HVAC system for your needs through proper load calculation and design. We consider unique factors like air stratification, allergies, and the need for continuous air circulation and filtration. With options like variable-speed fans and advanced air cleaners, we help improve comfort and air quality. Finally, we work within your budget to provide recommendations, often showing that energy savings can offset the cost of new equipment and installation.
How expensive is an air conditioner or heat pump system?
The cost of an air conditioner or heat pump depends on several factors, including the size of your home, the condition of your ductwork, and any additional accessories like thermostats or air cleaners. It's important to avoid purchasing a system that's too large, as this can reduce efficiency and increase costs. As your trusted HVAC contractor, we’ll perform accurate load testing and present you with options that suit both your comfort needs and budget.
Why should I replace my existing heating or cooling system?
If your air conditioning or heating system is old, inefficient, or in need of repair, it might be time for a replacement. New systems are up to 60% more efficient than those made just ten years ago, and poor maintenance can further reduce efficiency. High utility bills or costly repairs are signs that upgrading could save you money. The savings on your utility bills can offset the cost of a new system, and financing options make it even more affordable. Many customers find that upgrading to a higher efficiency model offers even greater savings.
Maintenance questions
Where do I get replacement parts?
Contact us for help with obtaining replacement parts.
Should I change my indoor coil?
When replacing your air conditioner or heat pump, it's best to replace both the indoor and outdoor units. Efficiency ratings are based on a matched system, so changing just the outdoor unit could result in lower performance and savings.
How long can I expect a new system to last?
If you are on a Hudco Inc. scheduled maintenance plan, industry averages suggest that an air conditioner should last 12-15 years (coastal applications may be less), and a gas furnace should last 20-25 years.
What is covered in my warranty?
The products we offer are top-of-the-line and typically come with a 10-year parts warranty, which is standard from most manufacturers. Some components even come with a lifetime warranty.
