HVAC Tips
Welcome to our HVAC Tips page, where you'll find energy-saving advice, answers to common heating and cooling questions, maintenance tips, and guidance on installing or replacing your HVAC system. We’re here to help you save energy, extend system life, and make informed decisions about your comfort.
Air Conditioning Maintenance
Air conditioner filters
Air conditioner filters play a key role in maintaining efficiency. Dirty or clogged filters block airflow, reducing system performance and causing dirt to accumulate on the evaporator coil. This can lower energy consumption by 5%–15%.

For central units, filters are usually found along the return duct, in walls, ceilings, or the air handler. Room units have filters in the front grill. Some filters are reusable, while others need replacing. Clean or replace your filter every month or two during the cooling season, or more often if the unit runs constantly, is in a dusty area, or if you have pets.

Hudco Inc. also recommends advanced air cleaners, which are more effective than standard filters at removing pet dander, pollen, bacteria, and even the flu virus, creating a healthier home and a cleaner HVAC system.
Air conditioner coils
The evaporator and condenser coils in your air conditioner collect dirt over time, which can reduce airflow and efficiency. While a clean filter helps prevent dirt buildup on the evaporator coil, it’s still important to check and clean the coil annually. To further prevent mold growth, we recommend installing a UV light inside the coil, as mold thrives in the damp, dark environment. Outdoor condenser coils can also accumulate dirt, especially in dusty areas or near foliage. Regularly cleaning the area around the coil and trimming back plants helps maintain proper airflow and system efficiency.
Coil fins
The aluminum fins on evaporator and condenser coils are delicate and can bend, blocking airflow. We use a specialized tool called a "fin comb" to straighten the fins and restore proper airflow.
Condensate drains
Another important maintenance task is checking the condensate drain. We use a stiff wire to clear any clogs in the drain channels. Clogged drains can prevent proper humidity control, leading to excess moisture that may damage walls or carpet.
Window seals for room air conditioners
At the start of each cooling season, we recommend checking the seal between the air conditioner and the window frame to ensure it properly contacts the unit's metal case. Moisture can damage the seal, causing cool air to escape.
Preparing for winter
In the winter, either cover your room air conditioner or remove and store it. For central air conditioners, covering the outdoor unit helps protect it from weather and debris, unless it's a heat pump that’s used during the winter.
